January Instant Win(ner) Roundup

At the end of the year I did a 2009 Instant Win Roundup and decided to do a monthly roundup so you can see what games I'm winning on and you can share with me what games you're winning on!

This month it seemed like I was spending a lot of time playing and a lot of time loosing (even my 3 yr old says in a sympathetic tone while I'm playing "Nope, you didn't win")! The easiest game to win on this month and the one I had the most success with was the Nestle Crunch Facebook Challenge and I sadly say good-bye tonight to one of my favorite games of the last year Twist Txt Get from mycoke.com!

Here's what I won this month:
What did you win this month?

Did you get any great deals at Dominick's this week?

Jewel Trip 1/29/10

I went to Jewel today to try the Fav 4 Deal out for myself and although I had success, it wasn't nearly as inexpensive as it has been in the past. Since I was already buying $14 worth of meat, I decided to do a $15 MIR for Miller Beer that a recently picked up in the liquor department (Buy $30 worth of meat, seasoning, salty snacks, deli items, frozen pizza or water PLUS a 12-pk or larger of Miller Lite and get $15 back). Essentially it makes the case of beer free.

I paid $28.83 oop (eek!) for everything shown above, but I will send in for the $15 MIR, so my net total for everything is $13.83 (that's more like it!)

Here's how my Fav 4 deal worked out:
  • Beef Stew ($2.72/lb smaller packs not in the Fav 4 coffin) - $2.88
  • Beef Stew ($2.72/lb smaller packs not in the Fav 4 coffin) - $2.99
  • Tyson Boneless Chicken Breast ($2.85/lb, bought the smallest package I could find) - $3.48
  • Tilapia Fillet - $4.61
After scanning the 4th package an instant deduction of $4.10 came off, making it a total of $9.86 for all 4 or $2.46 ea.

For the Beer rebate I also bought:
  • Case of Jewel Water $3.49, Used FREE Jewel Water coupon from the Preferred Card Update Booklet
  • Culinary Circle Pizza - $3.99, Used FREE Culinary Circle Pizza coupon from the Preferred Card Update Booklet
  • Tony's Pizza - $3 (included a free pass for bowling on the back of the box!), Used $3 Pizza tag, final price FREE
  • Snyders Pretzels - $2.49, Used $2 snack tag, Final price .49
  • Ruffles - $2.49, Used $2 snack tag, Final price .49
  • Tostitos - $2.99, Used $2 snack tearpad, Final price .99
And I bought some bananas since they are .39/lb this week!

Target Trip 1/29/10

Went to Target today to get in on the Pull-ups deal (as much as I wish we were totally diaper free, we still wear pull-ups at night). I also found a few things on clearance while I was there:
  • Buy 3 Huggies for $26.97. Use three $2.00/1 coupons from the 1/17 SS. Pay $20.97 with three $2.00 coupons and get $5.00 back for a net cost of $15.97/3, or $5.32/pack.
  • Almond Bark on clearance 75% for .54 a pack
  • Women's Bears apparel 75%, I picked up this Tshirt for $3.98.
  • I also found this ESPN 2 in 1 Shoot and Score Combo Game for $8.74 (not pictured as its still in the trunk but I thought the boys would like playing with it when the weather warms up!)
Did you get any good deals at Target this week?

LAST CHANCE ENDS TONIGHT! Giveaway: Coupon for a Free Box of General Mills Cereal

I meant to post this earlier today and totally forgot! Last chance to sign up for this giveaway! I'll be drawing names tomorrow and will notify the winners via email!!
General Mills recently announced a commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving. The company has already been reducing sugar in cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.

Did you know Ready-to-eat cereals, including presweetened cereals, account for only 5% of sugar in children’s diets? And that Ready-to-eat cereal is the No. 1 source of whole grains in a child’s diet today?

For more wellness information about kids and cereal go here!

My Blog Spark and General Mills sent me a few coupons for free boxes of cereal (up to $6.00) and I will be sharing with 2 lucky readers a coupon for a FREE box!

In the mean time, there is a printable coupon here good for $1.00/1 General Mills Trix Cereal, Cocoa Puffs Cereal, Lucky Charms Cereal or Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal!

You may enter this giveaway any or all of the ways listed below. Please submit a separate entry for each method (you may need to refresh to get a new form entry, but it is very important that submit separate entries so they all count).
  • Post a comment about what your kid's favorite breakfast food is!
  • Follow my blog and leave a comment (or if you are already a follower let me know).
  • Post about this giveaway on your blog and leave a link to your blog post.
  • Post a link about this giveaway on facebook and let me know.
  • Subscribe to my newsletter and leave a comment (or if you are already a subscriber let me know).
The giveaway ends on Thursday January 28th at 11:59 pm and 2 winners will be chosen via random.org on Friday January 29th (each receiving 1 coupon for a FREE box). GOOD LUCK!

Giveaway only open to people 18 years of age or older and a resident of the U.S. This giveaway is sponsored by My Blog Spark and General Mills who provided me with 4 coupons to try this product and share information. I am giving away 2 of those coupons, no other compensation was received.

Jewel Fav 4 Meat Deal is Back!

jewel

UPDATE: There have been lots of intermittent problems with this deal. Check out the update Mashup Mom has here.

Hooray the Fav 4 meat deal is back!

The way they advertise it in the sale ad is buy 4 packs of selected meat for $19.99 (you'll see it on the front page of this week's Jewel ad). Most of the larger packs are priced at $6 and then you get $4.10 off (which is really $19.90 not $19.99).

You get the best deals when you buy the weighted meats that are part of this deal (Jewel chicken, double packs of Pub burgers, beef stew). You can actually buy the SMALL packs that are stocked on the regular wall and not with the promotional packs. The small packs of chicken are usually priced around $2.25, the 2 packs of Jr. Pub burgers are $1.50 or you could do double packs of the regular pub burgers for $3. When you buy 4 of any of those you still get the $4.10 off...and the price is FAR less than $19.99!

Here are a few scenarios you could try - buy 2 packs of Jewel chicken breast tenders at about $2.25 a pack - and 2 2pks of Jr Pub burger for $1.50 each - you are at $7.50 minus the $4.10 - you are at $3.40 for 4 burgers and 2 packs of chicken. Or you could do 4 2-packs of Jr. pub burgers for $1.90 - $1.90 for 8 Jr. Pub burgers!

Not all stores carry the Jr. Pub burgers (which I actually prefer myself to the larger sized ones). If you like the biguns...don't buy the 4 packs that are pre-priced at $6, got to the wall and pick up 4 2packs at $3 each. Total will be $12 minus the $4.10 so $7.90 for 8 (which if you bought the 4 packs you'd pay $12 for 8)!

If you're still confused - head over to Mashup Mom. She has a great write up and tips to keep in mind when doing this deal!

Just FYI...some people are reporting problems with the discount not coming off this time around. Be prepared to take them off your order if you don't want them without the discount.

Dominick's Trip 1/26/10

So I know I told all of you guys that the fruit snack cat ended on Sunday, so that would mean that I should know that the cat ended on Sunday...and yet I found myself at Dominick's buying fruit snacks today and SURPRISE, guess what didn't print? The cat that ended on Sunday! Fail!

Luckily I was making money from the Crescent rolls so it didn't turn into an ultimate failure, but I am kicking myself because I could of used the overage on something else that I needed (since we are certainly already stocked up on fruit snacks)! Chalk it up to "you win some, you loose some" I guess!

I spent $1.56 oop on everything pictured above, spent a $3.50 cat but got back a $4.00 cat, net total for everything was $1.06! (I know, how can I get upset when I spent $1 on everything, right? But the truth is after awhile of being a "couponer", when things like this happen it totally kills the bargain high :P)!

Here's how it breaks down:
  • 6 boxes of Fruit Stackers (.99 ea) - $11.94, Instant $6 off for buying 2 sets of 3. Used 4 $1/2 printables. Final price $2.94 for all 6 boxes (Besides the $3.50 cat that didn't print which would have made them free... I was also expecting $1 off cellfire which I loaded earlier today but it didn't hit my card yet).
  • 2 Kettle Chips - $2.50 ea, Used 2 $2 off snack wine tags, Final price .50/ea
  • 6 Small Pillsbury Crescent Rolls ($1.69 ea) - $10.14, .50/2 from shortcuts.com, $1/2 from shortcuts.com, .50/2 from cellfire.com. Used 6 $1/1 from a tearpad found at Jewel and used 3 $1/2 Dominick's Store coupons from the Make It Tonight Simple Affordable Meals in-store at Dominick's. I was at an overage of .86 just using the coupons. But as a bonus when you buy 6 Pillsbury baked goods you get a $4 cat! So that made it a $4.86 moneymaker!
  • 2 cartons of eggs - $1.29 ea, Used BOGO printable from the Good Egg Project (no longer available).
  • 2 Jell-o Mouse Temptations - $3.50 ea, Used 2 FREE coupons from Houseparty (bought this so that I could use the Make it Tonight coupons that require a $20 purchase).
Did you have any bargain fails this week?

Jewel Trip 1/26/10

I paid $0.93 oop for everything shown in the picture above! Yes that is a $10 Pot Roast!! I also used an expiring $5 cat though, so my total net cost for everything was $5.93!

Got a great tip from Couponers Wanted and Mashup Mom this week about the advertised Roast deal at Jewel. In the ad it states if you buy a 3lb Jewel Signature Roast (Pot Roast, Round Roast or Pork Roast), you get a free bag of potatoes, carrots and celery. Well, it turns out that if you buy a roast that is over 3 lbs you get an instant deduction of $5.48 off the roast - NO NEED to buy the other 3 items, thus making your roast about 1/2 price!

UPDATE: A friend attempted to do the roast deal again (she had successfully done it yesterday) without buying the additional items and the instant discount did not come off. Use caution if doing this deal without the extra items. I also had another friend who did not get the discount when just buying the meat, but brought up the celery with her just in case and got the discount as soon as she scanned the celery. Be prepared to have them take it off the order, or buy the additional items if it doesn't work! Good luck!

Here's the deals broken down:
  • 3 1/4 lb Jewel Signature Pot Roast (do not get Stockman and Dakota) - $9.72 ($2.99/lb). Instant Deduction of $5.48 plus I used a $3 off Beef wine tag, Final Price $1.24!!
  • 3 lb bag of Apples - $1.88, Used FREE 3 lb bag of Apple coupon from the Jewel Preferred Card Update Book (handed out over the summer at Jewel events), Final Price FREE!
  • Ortega Salsa - $2.00, Used $2/1 any chips or salsa from Jim Bean tearpad (NAPN), Final Price FREE!
  • Dannon Light & Fit Yogurt - .50 each, Used $1/4 from a Dannon rebate in 2009, Final Price .25 each
  • Arnold Soft Family 100% Wheat Bread - $1.50 each, Used 2 $1/1 Arnold Bread from the Jewel Preferred Card Update Booklet, Final Price .50 each
  • Gallon of milk $2.38
Used $5 catalina from a previous shopping trip, paid .93 oop. Saved $26.20!

I also hopped over to Valli this morning and spent $13.66 on deli meat, butter and fresh produce!

Reminder - Giveaway: Coupon for a Free Box of General Mills Cereal

Coupon Tip (1/25/10) - Catalina Deals

I talk a lot about Catalina Deals and I thought it would be a good idea to have one place I can point back to that explains how catalina deals work. So this week's coupon tip is all about Catalina Deals!

Pairing up a sale with a coupon is a great way to save, but add a catalina deal in the mix and you usually can take home your items for free or close to free (if not MORE than free because you end up leaving with more than you came with - what couponers like to call "moneymakers"). Catalina deals run at Jewel, Dominicks, Ultra and Meijer's (and a few other stores too). You might be asking yourself what is a catalina? A catalina ("cat" for short) is a coupon that comes out of the little printer next to register and its called that because Catalina Marketing are the people responsible for them. Catalina deals usually are something around buying a specified dollar amount or item amount and then you get a catalina coupon for $x off your next order.

To make the most of catalina's couponers like to "roll" them if at all possible. That means buy the items that will generate the catalina and then use that catalina to buy MORE of the same items, pay little to nothing oop (out of pocket) and get another catalina. Wash-Rinse-Repeat.

Jewel
Although they generally work the same way wherever they are offered at Jewel it works a little differently for cat deals that involve a specified dollar amount. Most of the time (even though it is NOT advertised as such), catalinas will generate of the REGULAR non-prefered card price not the sale price. This means it takes less items to get to the specified dollar amount and you only have to pay the sale price! Add coupons on top of this and a lot of the time you can end up breaking even after your catalina prints if not making money on the deal!

Here's an example:
The ad states Buy $30 in one shopping trip earn $15 in catalina coupons to be used on your next order. For this example we are going to use Progresso Broth.

Progresso Broths - the non-preferred card price is $2.99, but the sale price is $1.49.

Non-Preferred Price 11 X $2.99 = $32.89 (enough to trigger your $15 in catalinas)
You actually pay: 11 X $1.49 = $16.39
After the $15 catalina you just paid $1.39 for 11 Progresso Broths.

Add coupons in the mix and you make it even a better deal! Say you only have 3 .50/1 coupons - you pay $14.89 and get back $15 = FREE. If you have 11 .50/1 coupons - you pay $10.89 and get back $15 - you just made $4.11!

If you want to guarantee that your catalina's will print, you should spend $30 in sale prices and your coupons will print. BUT as I mentioned above, the registers are currently programmed to calculate the $30 on the non-preferred card price (this is the first price that scans and prints on your receipt before your preferred card savings is listed). This of course can change at any time, and customer service has told me on more than one occasion that they are working on the fix...but I won't believe it until it happens!

Once you have your first set of $15 catalinas you can "roll" them and essentially pay tax after coupons if you have them, for whatever you want to buy in the deal!

IMPORTANT: And I can't stress this enough...please be kind to your customer service people. If you choose to work the deal in this way (basing it on non-preferred card prices) and your catalina doesn't print (which DOES happen for a variety of reasons)...please do NOT go to customer service and complain, yell or demand your cats. Just be prepared to return everything and try again. Your cat machine might be offline, out of paper, you didn't add right (all of these things have happened to me)...and most of the time it is my mistake (bought the wrong sku, short by a few cents). I can almost guarantee the answer you will get back if you do is that you didn't buy enough because it works on sale prices (which is not actually the case). And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS double check your math and use a price scanner if you aren't sure what the pre-perfered card price is.

A couple of tips:
  • Always check the cat machine if you can to make sure the solid green light is on!
  • If you want to be totally sure you'll be over the $ amount that you need to generate the cat before your preferred card savings, use the self check. Do not scan your preferred card first, scan your items. Once your done scanning all of the items for the deal, subtract the tax and if its over the dollar amount your cat should print. Then scan your preferred card so all of your savings come off and pay!
  • If you want to try and figure out the Non-preferred card sale price at the shelf. Look at the tag. Add the sale price to the "amount saved" and you should have the price is will actually ring up at the register before preferred card savings.
  • Avoid shopping between 11 pm and 2 am when Catalina is updating their machines.
  • And always be courteous to the coupon shopper behind you - don't clear the shelf. Of course buy what you need for your family, but if you need a lot (as in the typical amount that is on a shelf) consider putting in a special order. They have no problem ordering items for you.
For all other stores:
The Catalina deals are truly how they are stated in the ads or shelf tags...but using coupons plus electronic savings paired with a cat deal you can get things for free there as well!

Jewel Trip 1/24/10

I made a quick trip to Jewel this afternoon since today is the last day for the Kraft Catalina. I wanted to pick up some sour cream but was disappointed that the expiration dates were so soon which is probably why they are marked down to .99 (they must be trying to clear them out of the warehouse)! I still grabbed them since they were a money maker and shared some with my SIL this afternoon so 2 are not pictured. Here's what I got:

Transaction 1:
5 Breakstone Reduced Fat Sour Cream - .99
1 Ortega Salsa - $2.00
1 Jewel Kidney Beans - .79
Used 1 $1/2 Breakstone sour cream Catalina from Jewel
Used 3 .55/1 Breakstone sour cream from 1/24 SS and coupons.com
Used $2/1 Salsa tearpad in liquor department
Used $2.50 Catalina from a previous General Mills deal
Paid .76 and got back a $5 catalina, $1.74 money maker!

Transaction 2:
5 Breakstone Cottage Cheese Doublers - $1.19
Used $5 cat from above
Paid $1.08 and got back another $5 cat, .21 each!

After catalinas I made a net profit of .66 for everything!
